Public Gardens

By MaryJo Baur

Our area has a number of gardens that are open for public viewing, some charge a fee, some do not.  If you head up to New Hampshire, you could visit Fuller Gardens in North Hampton.  They are best known for their collection of roses, though there are many other plants in this estate garden.  In Portsmouth, there is a trial garden for the All American Selection winners and contenders at Prescott Park which is tended by UNH.

In Massachusetts, Framingham is the site of Garden in the Woods which specializes in wildflowers, and in Boylston, in the Worcester area, you'll find Tower Hill Botanic Garden.  Farther west in Shelburne Falls, there's the Bridge of Flowers which is a lovely site over the river there.  You can walk across the bridge surrounded by flowers on both side of the path.

If you're visiting Rhode Island, stop by Blithewold Mansion in Bristol which has lovely grounds and gardens and views of the ocean.

Many garden clubs hold tours once a year when you can visit the private gardens of some of their members.  Many on Cape Cod are held in the summer, so watch for ads wherever you may be vacationing.  I visited Savannah, GA last March during the weekend of their club's home and garden tour and found it fascinating.
