Pansies

By Mary Jo Baur

Did you know it is possible to winter over pansies in our area?  After a hard frost, cover them with 5 to 6 inches of mulch to keep the soil temperature even and prevent the plants from heaving out of the ground because of the cycles of freezing and thawing.  But you must remember to pull the mulch away from the plants in late February so that they won't rot.  Your pansies will bloom much earlier if you follow this procedure.  I have read that fall-planted pansies overwinter better and come back quicker in the spring, but I don't recall seeing pansies for sale at this time of year.
