Prepare for Irene

By Mary Jo Baur

With a hurricane arriving this weekend, what should we do about our gardens?  The first thing that comes to mind is to bring in containers or anything else that could blow away in high winds.  That includes patio furniture, umbrellas, bird feeders, hanging baskets, basically anything not anchored down.  Loose objects can become projectiles and break windows in their flight.

Overhanging branches from trees and shrubs could become a problem. Downed  tree limbs can damage your home, roof or car, and also knock down electrical lines.  Dead or weakened trees are especially prone to come down in a storm.

Today I also took in some unripe tomatoes, but that was mainly to keep them away from the chipmunks who have decided that they enjoy them.  If you have green beans, it might be a good idea to get them in because you don't want to pick them in wet conditions.  Doing so can spread disease.

So batten down the hatches and ride out this storm.  Maybe it won't be as bad as they are predicting.
