Are you tired of mums as a fall accent in your garden? There are other choices. Consider ornamental cabbages and kales. Most garden centers carry them, so they are not hard to find. I have found that they look better longer into the cold weather than most mums. The large rosette forms come in shades of pink or white or a creamy gold color surrounded by green. They are easy care--as in plant them and forget them. They can even be used in arrangements just like flowers. They could make a lovely centerpiece for your dining table well into November. Once cut and placed in water, they will last about two weeks. Remove some of the outer leaves if they have browned or look less than pristine. They really make a vivid presence in any room.
If you are looking for a fushia color, try "Nagoya Red" kale. "Osaka White" kale which is edged in pale green is a good choice if you're looking for a creamy white. "Dynasty Red" cabbage has reddish colored veins which are striking. Even if you find unnamed varieties, they are sure to brighten your autumn garden.
