Color Combinations

By Mary Jo Baur

Right now I'm seeing a lot of white and yellow in my gardens. Solidago (goldenrod) is blooming along with the last of the white yarrow.  For annuals, my calendulas are shades of yellow and orange and my cleome this year are white as opposed to the usual pink blossoms.  Out back, I have a large clump of black-eyed Susans next to some very tall white phlox.  Some stems of the phlox got beaten down in the heavy rain, but the ones that didn't break completely have revived.  There are also white balloon flowers near a clump of thread-leaf coreopsis that is blooming for the second time this season with their cheery yellow flowers.

If you want to plan certain color combos, there a several things to consider.  You need to choose plants that bloom at the same time and in the same conditions.  In other words, do they thrive in sun or shade?  Do they like dry or moist soil?  Most labels, when you buy perennials, will indicate what time of the year the flowers bloom and the types of conditions they need to do well in your garden.
